from burnout to balance

How aligning to the moon helped me reclaim my energy, rhythm and self.

I didn’t set out to create a self-care plan. I just knew I was exhausted.

I was burnt out, overwhelmed, and running on empty. I kept trying all the “usual” things — supplements, productivity hacks, morning routines — but nothing stuck.

One minute I’d be 100% on task. The next... flat and unmotivated. Anything to do with looking after myself fell into the too-hard basket.

Then I started paying attention to something I’d grown up with, but never truly understood — the maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar.

In te ao Māori (the Māori world view), the moon isn’t just a phase in the sky. It’s a rhythm. A timekeeper. A guide.

When I began aligning my daily life with those rhythms, things started to shift.

WHERE DID THIS JOURNEY really START?

My wellbeing didn’t disappear all at once. It slipped away, piece by piece.

I was balancing work, whānau life, being a māmā, and running a business — and I wasn’t doing it well. Every new problem threw me off course. As the pressure piled up, I began giving parts of myself away just to cope.

Exercise? Gone. Proper meals? Replaced with snacks and last-minute food. Poor sleep followed. My immune system crashed. Then came financial pressure. Then panic. Then... total burnout. And I withdrew from those I loved - thinking that keeping it to myself was best so they didn't worry.

But the thread that held me — barely — was my connection to the whenua (land). I took time out, returned home to where my family is from, and reset. That reconnection saved me and allowed me to take big shifts towards a better me.

It even led to me quiting my day job to pour my heart and soul into the things I care about!

Reconnecting through the māori world

If any of this feels familiar — you’re not alone.

So many of us are running on empty, without the space to pause and ask what we really need. For me, that pause came through reconnecting to te ao Māori — the Māori world. And really, that means reconnecting to the natural world.

One part of this knowledge system is the maramataka — a lunar calendar that aligns actions and rest with moon phases. It gave me permission to stop fighting myself — and instead move with the rhythm.

Another key part is Te Whare Tapa Whā — the Māori model of wellbeing that sees your life as a wharenui (large house) with four walls: mental, spiritual, physical, and social wellbeing. When one wall weakens, the whole whare feels it. It's foundation is the whenua (land) it sits on - or the environment.
