KINAKI | INGREDIENTS

Aotearoa NZ glacial clay - with whakapapa to Canterbury, this clay was formed through the combination of ancient volcanic ash and fresh glacial water at the foothills of the Southern Alps over three million years ago. Due to the nature of the volcanic ash and the fresh glacial water environment, it also contains other healing clays such as kaolinite, illite and montmorillinite. It is unique in that it can produce an “electrical charge” when hydrated, which is said to allow it to absorb toxins, heavy metals, chemicals and other impurities from the skin and body.

Aotearoa NZ sodium bentonite clay - similar to the NZ glacial clay in regards to its unique electrical charge, it is said to be great for detoxifying the skin and relieving skin irritation.

French green clay | Illite - said to help soothe and relax skin that is tight or irritated. Green clay has a cleansing nature and is also very beneficial to use on the main parts of the body - back, legs, feet, arms and shoulders!

Organic matcha green tea powder - thought to boost collagen and maintain healthy skin.

Kawakawa | macropiper excelsum - a rongoā rākau (native plant) that is said to soothe skin and help reduce inflammation due to its antimicrobial and analgesic properties. From a wairua (spiritual) perspective, Māori believe it gives strength to move forward fearlessly & have faith.

Manuka | leptospermum scoparium| kahikatoa | tea tree - a rongoā rākau (native plant) said to soothe body and soul through its purification, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory properties. From a wairua (spiritual) perspective, Māori believe it supports self-regeneration, metamorphosis, being in touch with your own power, and depth of inner experience.

Chamomile | matricaria recutita - known to contain powerful anti-oxidants including polyphenols and phytochemicals which are said to help aging skin, protects from free radical damage by accelerating cell and tissue renewal, and give the skin a glow.

WHAKAMAHI | HOW TO USE

Cleanse your skin with the MK akuaku cleanser or product of choice and pat dry.

Mix 1-2 teaspoons of uku karera with water and mix into a paste. Add more water if needed, and for extra hydration add a few drops of your MK facial oil.

Use a brush to apply the mask to your face and neck - making sure to avoid the eyes.

Leave to dry for 10-15 minutes and wash away with luke warm/cool water.

For extra exfoliation, reactivate the dried mask by wetting it with your hands and in a circular motion, massage the mask into your skin - focusing on areas that hold tension such as jaw and temple.

While doing, practice mindfulness by reflecting on your day & letting go of the negative. Breath deeply, slowly and with intent. Hā ki roto, hā ki waho - you got this!

Use 1 - 2 time per week or as needed.

WHAKAPAI AKE | LEVEL UP

The uku karera clay mask comes in powder form to extend its shelf life without the use of preservatives, making it more versatile in being able to add additional wet and dry ingredients of your choice.

Most people will opt to add water to their clay masks, but there are many other ingredients you can use with them! Why not try:

Aloe vera juice - best known for its sunburn-soothing effects, it is also a mild astringent that heals acne, and balances pH levels.

Apple cider vinegar - the malic acid in it makes it a great nonabrasive exfoliant and astringent. It also restores pH and soothes itchy, dry skin. Be sure to dilute ACV with water in a 1:2 solution before mixing it with the clay mask.

Green tea - full of natural catechins (antioxidants with free radical-fighting superpowers) it is said to provide anti-aging benefits by preventing and repairing cell damage and promoting healthy cell turnover. It also tightens pores, moisturises, and soothes inflammation and puffiness. The caffeine is also said to help increase circulation and fight redness.

Honey - raw honey is rich in antioxidants, potassium, and other minerals and vitamins, and is one of the best natural humectants (which help keep moisture in the skin). It's also antibacterial and anti-fungal, so it fights off acne-causing bacteria.

Lemon juice - the juice and rind of lemons are rich in antibacterial phytochemicals and circulation-boosting citric acid.which are said to even skin tone, brighten and lighten skin and hair, reduce blotchiness, and is a non-abrasive exfoliant. Citrus aromas are also wonderful mood lifters! Avoid if you have very dry, sun or wind-burned, or sensitive skin and ensure a diluted solution is used.

Milk - the lactic acid in milk is a mild, non-abrasive exfoliant, great for cleansing, renewing, and softening dry, irritated, and sensitive skin. Whole milk contains extra fats and proteins as additional skin-soothers. Be sure to use hormone-free whole milk. Almond, goat, and soy milks can be used as substitutes.

Rosewater - also known as rose hydrosol is said to balance all skin types, retain moisture, soothe redness, and is a mild astringent and antibacterial. It can be used on even the most sensitive or dry skin. Uplifting and anxiety-erasing, rosewater is emotionally beneficial too!

Yogurt - because it's made with milk, yogurt also contains the non-abrasive exfoliant, lactic acid. It gently dissolves dead skin cells, softens skin and hair and evens out skin tone. Be sure to choose a plain, unsweetened yogurt to combine with your clay mask.

Avocado - is super hydrating, and nourishes your skin with essential fatty acids to help your cells restore and regenerate. It also contains essential vitamins and minerals such as E, C, K, and magnesium to improve chronic skin conditions like eczema and acne.
